Embodied Systems

Nadia Schambach is a Utrecht-based maker working through experimentation and material exploration. Within her practice, she investigates how objects can develop their own presence and how they relate to their surroundings.

For this exhibition, she presents sculptures that emerge from the idea of creating an independent being: an organism that lives its own temporary life. The works are constructed from a metal skeleton covered with a latex skin. Through a mechanical system, the sculptures slowly fill with air and release it again. This rhythmic movement gives the impression that they are breathing, creating a sense of vulnerability and physical presence.

The works invite us to reflect on the present moment. Like living beings, they change over time and eventually transform. The materials carry the traces of their existence: the latex discolors, stretches and ages, while the metal slowly collects signs of time and use. The sculptures are therefore not created to remain unchanged, but to experience their own temporary existence.

Through their changing nature, the works explore the relationship between presence and impermanence. Moving between object and organism, the sculptures reflect on change, fragility, and the beauty of something that is not meant to last forever.
